Typical “Randoseru” is a firm sided bag made of leather or synthetic leather, having size of roughly 30 cm high, 23 cm wide and 18 cm deep.  It is made robust enough for most children to use during the whole six years of elementary school, which is from first grade to sixth grade in Japan (ages 6 to 12 years old).

Traditionally, girls use red “Randoseru” and boys use black ones, but nowadays, other colors such as pink, brown, blue, etc. are also becoming popular. It is quite common for grandparents to purchase “Randoseru” as a gift for their grandchildren when entering elementary schools, since “Randoseru” is used by almost all children.
