“Koyo” 「紅葉」 : colored autumn leaves

Japan has four distinct seasons, and when autumn deepens and temperature starts to drop, the leaves begin to color in the fields and mountains. “Koyo”, colored autumn leaves, usually begins when temperature at night becomes below 8 degrees Celsius. The “Koyo” season in Japan typically begins in mid-September in Hokkaido, the most northern island, and spread southwards covering Japan in about a month and a half.

Many people in Japan enjoy “Momiji-gari” (紅葉狩り), ‘hunting for colored autumn leaves’, which is to visit scenic areas to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of autumn leaves.  It is somewhat similar to people enjoying cherry blossoms in spring.

Going out to enjoy autumn colored leaves has been a custom in Japan for centuries, and it appears in old novels in 8-9th century. Today, people enjoy “Koyo” in the cities or through hiking or diving in the mountain areas.

Temple gardens in Kyoto or mountains and lakes in Nikko are some of the most famous “Koyo” spots in Japan, but there are many other popular places including ones in the cities, where you could enjoy the beautiful scenery. If you visit Japan in this time of the season, please check out the best timing and place to visit according to your schedule, as the timing of turning colors depends on the year.

Best wishes for good hunting!
