“Yukata” is a casual light “Kimono” made of cotton, typically worn during the summer

“Yukata” was originally a cambric Kimono worn at bath in the 9-10th century.  Later it became a kind of cotton bathrobe worn after bath. In the 19th century, people began to wear “Yukata” in the hot season both at home and in the streets.

Traditional “Kimono”, typically made of silk, has many basic accessories to be worn properly, requires one or more undergarments, and is quite a hassle to put on. Besides formal social events or special ceremonies, few people wear “Kimono” today in their daily life.

On the other hand, “Yukata” is a single-layered piece, easy to wear and matches better with Japanese hot summer. These days it has become quite popular especially among young women, who wear “Yukata” as fashionable out door wear for summer events such as summer festivals or firework festivals.

“Yukata” is also used as night clothes and often worn in bed. Most Japanese style hotels “Ryokan” have “Yukata” available for the guests. So you may have a chance to try it on during your stay Japan!
