“Jinrikisha” is a small, two-wheeled, cart-like passenger vehicle with a retractable roof, pulled by one or more person. It was widely used in Japan as means of transportation, until early 20th century when horse coaches, trains, and automobiles became popular.

Nowadays, “Jinrikisha” is no longer used as pure means of transportation, but instead, utilized at prime sightseeing spots for excursion tours, and sometimes at a wedding, as special arrangements.

When visiting historical cities such as Kamakura or Kyoto, or older towns like Asakusa Tokyo, you could very easily encounter “Jinrikisha”.  Typically, the puller, called “Shafu”, will act as a tour guide and take you around the major sightseeing spots in the city in a two passenger seat “Jinrikisha”

The fare is rather expensive – for example around 4000yen per kilometer for two person, or 9000yen for 30 minute sightseeing trip – , but it would definitely be a great experience, if you have a chance to ride them!
