【英語】 Kakigori : 冷た~い「かき氷」で暑い夏に打ち勝とう!

“Kakigori” is a Japanese summer desert made of shaved ice, served with various syrups, and sometimes with assorted toppings.  Typically, “Kakigori” machine is used to make “Kakigori”, which is a hand cranked (or electric, these days) machine to spin a block of ice over a special shaving blade.

かき氷は、細かく削られた氷の上に様々なシロップをかけ、時には付け合せを盛り付けた夏のデザートです。手回し或いは電気で氷を回転させながら特殊な刃で削る「かき氷機」を用いて作ります。

 

The desert is very popular, and many Japanese even privately own simple “Kakigori” machine to enjoy at their homes. You can try “Kakigori” at many places during the summer – various restaurants, coffee shops, shopping malls, and also many stalls in parks, at festivals, on the beaches, etc. serve “Kakigori”. Just look for a banner that says 「氷」!

Variety of syrup flavors include strawberry, melon, lemon, sweet plum, mango, orange, condensed milk (often children’s favorite at homes), and so on…., but green tea should be what reminds people of Japan the most.  
苺、メロン、レモン、梅酒、オレンジ、マンゴー、家庭での子供達に人気の甘くしたコンデンスミルクなど様々なシロップがありますが、日本茶が最も日本を連想させるものではないでしょうか。

 

Especially, the desert such as in the picture is many people’s favorite and called “Uji-Kintoki”. It comes with sweetened green tea syrup and assorted “Azuki” (red beans), sometimes accompanied by white “Mochi” (rice cake) balls. “Uji” is a famous town for top quality green tea production, and “Kintoki” is a byname of “Azuki”

特に写真のようなものは「宇治金時」と呼ばれ、大人気。抹茶シロップに小豆が添えられ、時には白玉が加えられます。
宇治は日本茶の名産地、金時はあずきの別称です。

 

“Kakigori” will definitely give you intense coolness to overcome the hot and humid Japanese summer!
